Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

Global regulators commit to playing their part in tackling antimicrobial resistance as a priority

In this statement, ICMRA members reiterate that preserving the effectiveness of antimicrobials is a top priority globally for the protection of public health and that regulators have an important role to play. To tackle antimicrobial resistance, global regulators agree on the need for a multifaceted approach, which includes:

  • Fostering prudent use of existing treatments,
  • Developing new innovative antimicrobials,
  • Promoting better use of vaccines,
  • Supporting research on alternatives, and
  • Delivering better diagnostic tools at the point of care.

International regulators also stress their commitment to keep collaborating and joining forces to address the global public health challenge of antimicrobial resistance.

World AMR Awareness Week 2024: Preventing antimicrobial resistance together

To mark World Antimicrobial Awareness Week in 2024, ICMRA has developed visual materials to raise awareness of the growing public health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) including key figures and a call to action for global health leaders, decision-makers and the pharmaceutical industry to help stop this “silent pandemic”. The materials focus on the need for research and development of innovative antimicrobials and vaccines and diagnostic products that facilitate prudent and appropriate use.

ICMRA encourages stakeholders to join the fight against AMR and share the recommendations with others.

World AMR Awareness Week 2023: Preventing antimicrobial resistance together

In support of the World AMR Awareness Week on 18–24 November in 2023, ICMRA has developed key messages and visual materials to raise awareness of the growing public health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to highlight successful regulatory and non-regulatory interventions. The visuals highlight actions and activities that can be taken to help combat AMR based on best practices from around the world.

ICMRA AMR Best Practices Report

Building on the ICMRA’s antimicrobial resistance (AMR) joint statement published in 2019, the ICMRA adopted a new AMR project in 2021 on AMR best practices. The project leveraged the collective knowledge and experience of ICMRA members to develop case studies to highlight successful or promising regulatory and non-regulatory interventions in different jurisdictions to address AMR.

The ICMRA AMR Best Practices Report presents a compilation of case studies intended to serve as tools to raise awareness of important actions taken to date to combat AMR, within the ICMRA membership and beyond. These case studies also serve to promote further discussions within the ICMRA membership and opportunities to adapt these best practices for implementation, strengthening our resolve to take bold steps to address this important public health issue and setting the stage for future collaborations.

We all have a role to play in combatting AMR. ICMRA recognizes that AMR is a complex, multi-faceted problem, and is calling for a coordinated, One Health response across all sectors, including public health, animal health, and the environment. A concerted and collaborative effort from all partners is essential to ensuring our success in addressing this threat to our health, economies and security.

Global regulators support World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2020

In support of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2020, which is marked from 18 to 24 November 2020, the International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) has published a set of info-cards. The info-cards stress the need for cross-sectoral, global cooperation to combat antimicrobial resistance around the world and highlight the important role of global health leaders, medicines regulators, researchers, pharmaceutical industry and media.
World Antimicrobial Awareness Week aims to raise awareness of the growing public health threat of antimicrobial resistance and to promote best practices among policy makers, healthcare professionals and the general public to avoid the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.
‘The problem of antimicrobial resistance is multifaceted and cannot be addressed by one single organisation or sector. A coordinated global approach and commitment are required to tackle this public health threat,’ said Emer Cooke, Chair of ICMRA and EMA’s Executive Director. ’As global regulators, we have a responsibility to bring to the market safe, effective and high-quality medicines that can help combat antimicrobial resistance. International collaboration is crucial to streamline regulatory requirements and facilitate access to critical antimicrobials around the world.’
Since 2019, ICMRA has convened several panel discussions with international regulators and other key stakeholders to provide strategic direction and find innovative solutions to fight the spread of antimicrobial resistance. As a result, ICMRA published a joint statement on antimicrobial resistance aimed to reinforce national commitment and stimulate global action to address this public health threat. The statement is available in multiple languages.
